First Year Read
Day after Night by Anita Diamant
Publication Date: 2009-09-08
From the New York Times:
Night in the title of Anita Diamant’s latest novel refers to the Holocaust. Each of the four women at the center of this book has survived it in her own way — as a partisan fighter, in a concentration camp, in forced prostitution, hidden by a gentile family — only to land in the Atlit internment camp, a British-run prison for illegal immigrants in Palestine. The women forge friendships as they share their losses and debate how best to go on with their lives in the face of devastation. “They were reluctant to tell their own stories because all of them began and ended with the same horrible question: Why was I spared?” They find common purpose in escaping from their prison; the novel is based on real events.
